Solar Panel Installation
Before you can install solar panels on any rooftop from small houses to large commercial buildings, you must verify that the existing structure is capable of resisting new loads added to the building. Solar panels not only add weight, although it is relatively light compared to other building materials, but they also add uplift loading due to wind forces, and can alter a building’s performance during a seismic event. For these reasons most building departments require an architect to certify that the structure of the existing building is sufficient. Sometimes it is necessary to submit a plan showing rooftop access for fire-fighting purposes.
It is important during the planning stages to contact an architect if you are thinking about installing solar panels. You may save yourself headaches with your local building department later.
